CHARLOTTE – If you’re in need of a computer to access things like jobs or school, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has a good deal this year.
The library system is issuing 20,000 refurbished laptops to adults who are eligible for the program in Mecklenburg County. Each laptop is free, and it includes “preloaded productivity and education applications.”
To qualify, you need to be 18 years or older, live in Mecklenburg County with proof of residency, have access to an active email address, and have a photo identification card. You’ll also have to sign a statement attesting that you don’t have “the technology necessary to meet educational/informational needs.”
Applications will be open online starting on Thursday, Jan. 19. To apply, visit this link and fill out your information. You can fill out the form using a smartphone or by visiting a library branch.
According to the library, the computers will be installed with Linux and open-source software that’s compatible with many Windows programs like Microsoft Office. The computers will also have on-device internet filtration software installed. No technical support will be provided, and there won’t be replacements available.
Approved applicants will receive a confirmation within 7-10 business days; you’ll then sign up for a distribution date and time through that confirmation email.
