Ontario Tech in Oshawa now has a new home for its 10 Esports teams.
The Ontario Tech Student Union (OTSU) says the university’s new Esports arena had its grand opening Monday in Shawenjigewinning Hall.
The new facility has 12 computers with the latest specifications and can host community events and collegiate matches.
There are 10 teams in the Ontario Tech Student Union Esports program that participate in the following competitions: Valorant, Overwatch 2, League of Legends, Hearthstone, Call of Duty, Fortnite, Rocket League, Eternal Return, Beat Saber and Rainbow Six Siege.
The teams are also involved in a number of leagues.
“This is an exciting day for the OTSU — one that many of us have been working hard on bringing to life for well over two years,” said Josh Sankarlal, OTSU President. “The launch of our esports arena not only concludes a years long effort to amalgamate the esports scene at Ontario Tech, it is also symbolic of a larger change taking place at the OTSU as a whole. As we grow and change, the OTSU must expand to make connections beyond the walls of the university, and growing our esports service to pit our players in games with other institutions nationwide certainly speaks to a portion of these efforts.”
“I’m excited and stoked for the opening of our esports arena,” said Sinthuyan Uthayanan, OTSU Project Coordinator. “This space has come a long way from when the plans were first thought almost three years ago. We faced a lot of adversity building it and we couldn’t have done it without the support of the OTSU, our esports student executives and the university’s IT department.”
