Los Angeles Chargers’ Derwin James Jr. avoids suspension from NFL after huge helmet-to-helmet hit on Colts’ Ashton Dulin – but both players will miss Sunday’s NFL games with concussions
Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. has avoided suspension after being ejected for a thunderous helmet-to-helmet shot on Monday Night Football.
As ever, James was flying around the football field in the Chargers’ 20-3 win over Indianapolis.
Known for his big-hitting ability as Travis Kelce discovered earlier this season, James laid the wood on Colts wideout Ashton Dulin in the second quarter, resulting in their permanent departure from the game.
The 26-year-old was checked out in the team’s medical tent on the side before being escorted to the locker room visibly upset and following the game head coach Brandon Staley announced that James was placed into concussion protocol.
Derwin James Jr. has avoided suspension from the NFL but will miss the Chargers’ Sunday game
According to ESPN, the NFL considered keeping James out of upcoming games. He will miss the Chargers all-LA game vs. the Rams on Sunday due to a concussion.
A fine is currently not out of the realms of possibility. Each week, the league reviews plays and agrees with the on-field personal foul call for unnecessary roughness.
Dulin was ruled out of the rest of the game after heading to the locker room following the second quarter hit. He will also miss the Colts trip to New York to face the seemingly playoff-bound Giants.
James was ejected for an illegal hit on Indianapolis wide receiver Ashton Dulin Monday night
Earlier this year, James was named to the Pro Bowl for the third time in his five-year professional career.
James was drafted by the Chargers with the 17th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Florida State.
The Chargers have already clinched a playoff spot and hold the sixth spot in the AFC. If the standings do not change in the final two weeks, No. 6 LAC would travel to No. 3 Cincinnati.
