Another one bites the dust as another member of the 2022 Boston Red Sox has left in free agency.
Tyler Danish has agreed to sign a minor-league deal with the New York Yankees after spending the 2022 season with the Red Sox, the New York Post’s John Heyman reports. Boston outrighted Danish off the 40-man roster in October, and he elected to become a free agent.
The right-hander spent the first years of his career with the Chicago White Sox, playing from 2016 to 2018. However, after he was released by the Mariners on May 24, 2019, it would be another 726 days before he pitched in affiliated baseball again.
Danish, who was drafted out of high school, almost walked away from baseball during that stretch. In 2021, he was days away from fully transitioning to his post-baseball life by pursuing an engineering degree at St. Petersburg College. Then the Angels came calling with a minor league deal.
“I had signed up for (online) classes,” Danish said in spring training. “I was five days away from starting summer classes. … I wasn’t excited about it.”
During his 2022 run with the Red Sox, Danish posted a 5.13 ERA across 40.1 innings in 32 games, finishing with a 3-1 record. Danish missed a large chunk of the season after suffering a right forearm strain in July that saw him unable to play in 45 games.
Prior to his stint with the Red Sox, Danish pitched with their Double-A affiliate Portland Sea Dogs and Triple-A affiliate Worcester Red Sox. His time with both was short, pitching to a 1.93 ERA in four games with the Sea Dogs and a 5.68 ERA in six games with the WooSox.
Danish was called up to the Red Sox on Sept. 2 after fellow righty Zack Kelly was placed on the paternity list.
