Carlos Correa, like baseball fans and reporters alike, believed his 13-year, $350 million agreement with the Giants was a done deal.

Correa went through his physical Monday, as is the routine for any player who agrees to a contract with a new team in MLB free agency. Afterwards, the star shortstop went house shopping in the Bay Area along with his wife, son and business managers, per Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Jim Colhoun, a house listing agent, worked with Correa and his family, and showed them houses in Lafayette, an East Bay suburb about 20 miles away from Oracle Park.

“He chatted easily and expressed excitement at the prospect of joining the Giants,” Colhoun wrote in an email to Kroichick.

The Correa family clearly was ready to spend the next decade-plus in the Bay. That is, until the Giants postponed Correa’s introductory press conference in shocking fashion Tuesday morning, reportedly because of a disagreement about something discovered in his physical.

Correa’s agent, Scott Boras, revealed Thursday morning that Correa was in his hotel room with his family when he heard the Giants were delaying his introduction.

“We were all in the hotel in San Francisco. He had his parents there, his brother, his wife’s parents,” Boras said. “It was certainly a roller-coaster for the Correa family. I called him to my room [to tell Correa the news].

“He was obviously surprised, as we all were, frankly.”

Once Correa landed a new contract agreement from the New York Mets late Tuesday night — a stunning 12-year agreement worth $315 million — the star shortstop tackled his agent and tossed him across the bed in that same San Francisco hotel room.

Now, instead of packing his belongings for a new mansion in Lafayette, Correa will settle into a New York penthouse.
