Desperate times call for desperate measures.

And no MLB club is more desperate these days than the Giants.

San Francisco has struck out twice in its attempt to land a new face of the franchise, with the New York Yankees re-signing outfielder Aaron Judge (nine years, $360 million) and the New York Mets poaching shortstop Carlos Correa (12 years, $315 million).

So where do the Giants turn to find a game-changing bat for their lineup?

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Matt Kawahara has an idea.

Maybe the biggest splash the Giants could still make would be to, say, overwhelm the Red Sox with a trade offer for Rafael Devers. But the Giants also might hesitate to part with so much for a player set to be a free agent next offseason and Boston has said extending Devers is a goal.

Bold? Definitely. Possible? Perhaps.

It isn’t hard to imagine Devers refusing to sign a long-term deal with the Red Sox after watching Boston trade former American League MVP Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers and letting two-time World Series champion Xander Bogaerts bolt for the San Diego Padres.

And make no mistake about it: Devers is one of the best hitters in baseball.

The 26-year-old third baseman is a two-time All-Star with three top-15 finishes in AL MVP voting. He’s hit at least 20 home runs in four of the last five seasons (the only exception being the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign).

Devers in a Giants uniform isn’t so far-fetched, especially if Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom decides he won’t be able to re-sign the slugger and flips him before free agency next winter to ensure he gets something back in return.
