A good docking station is an essential accessory for many laptop users, especially the newer laptops with only a couple of USB-C ports and no other connections. A dock provides most of the connections you’d find on a desktop computer or a large laptop. It’s an ideal tool for making a smaller laptop more versatile.
There are a lot of portable docks on the market and much larger types that are primarily intended for hotdesking use. However, very few designs fall between those two styles of dock.
Now Ugreen, the manufacturer of electronic accessories and power banks, has stepped in to fill the gap with the Ugreen USB-C Multifunction Dock Pro. This dock is small enough to pop in a bag but powerful enough for hotdesking and running multiple monitors. The Ugreen dock works with Apple MacBooks and Windows laptops and has an impressive 13 ports despite being just 13cm tall.
With support for data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps, this dock can shift data to external drives at speed, but it’s compact enough to be used for hotdesking in a confined space like a home office. It’s also just about small enough to be used on the go. The 13 ports include a single USB A 3.1 Gen 2 port plus one USB-C 3.2 port with data speeds up to 10Gbps. Two further USB 3.0 ports can be used to connect legacy or slower peripherals like a mouse or a keyboard.
Ugreen has included a PD 3.0 port that can handle a maximum of 100W pass-through charge from a laptop power supply to power the dock and the host computer. The PD 3.0 port enables the dock to be used without worrying about draining the host laptop’s rechargeable battery.
Alongside the data ports, this mid-sized dock has two HDMI ports and a DisplayPort. The HDMI2 port can support an 8K display with a 30Hz refresh rate. All three ports can also support 4K screens at a 60Hz refresh rate. The support for three external displays is handy for anyone wanting to mirror or extend their laptop’s display.
The other ports offered by the Ugreen dock include a Gigabit Ethernet port, SD and microSD card slots, plus a 3.5mm combo audio jack for connecting a pair of headphones or a headset with a microphone.
Verdict: The Ugreen USB-C Multifunction Dock Pro is a neat desktop docking solution for Macs and PCs. Its vertical format and compact dimensions make it ideal for hotdesking in a home office. The support for three displays is excellent for home workers with multiple screens. This docking station offers most of the ports anyone could need and won’t take up much desk space. The only downside here is the price, which is quite steep, but if you want a great-looking and compact dock with support for an 8K display, this could be the one for you.
