Mets sign five players to minor league contracts, including Tommy Hunter

The Mets signed Tommy Hunter, Sean Reid-Foley, Jimmy Yacabonis, Jose Perazaand Abraham Almonte to minor league contracts with invites to spring training, the team announced on Friday.

Hunter has spent part of the last two seasons with the Mets. The right-hander appeared in 18 games last season pitching to a 2.42 ERA (4.28 FIP) in 22.1 innings. The 15-year MLB veteran has a career 4.00 ERA in 893.2 innings pitched. Hunter will turn 37 in July.

Reid-Foley, who joined the Mets in 2021 from Toronto, appeared in 19 games across the past two seasons. The righty has pitched to a 5.28 ERA (4.29 FIP) in 30.2 innings. The 27-year-old lost most of last season after he underwent Tommy John surgery in May.

Yacabonis appeared in 14 games last season while splitting time between Tampa Bay and Miami. The 30-year-old right-hander pitched to an 8.36 ERA (6.40 FIP) over 14 innings in 2022.

Peraza, who can play both shortstop and second base, appeared in 64 games with the Mets in 2021. He batted .204/.266/.380 with a 75 OPS+ in 154 plate appearances and hit six homers and had 20 RBI that season.

Almonte, 33, appeared in 15 games for the Boston Red Sox a season ago. The outfielder slashed .257/.297/.400 with nine hits (three for extra bases) in 35 at-bats. However, in 80 games in Tiple-A in 2022, he batted .293 with 18 home runs and 66 RBI. The 10-year veteran has appeared in 455 games at the big league level and has a career .235/.302/.374 slash with an 83 OPS+.
