Ex-MLB GM names Yankees’ top contenders for Andrew Benintendi

  • by

The New York Yankees want to run it back with Andrew Benintendi.

But The Athletic’s Jim Bowden reports the market for the free-agent outfielder is flush with suitors.

The Yankees want to re-sign Andrew Benintendi because they need to add another left-handed bat and create more traffic on the bases at the top of their lineup. Benintendi would be an ideal fit for teams such as the Blue Jays, White Sox, Astros, Rays and Marlins that needs a left-handed-hitting outfielder.

Last week, NJ Advance Media’s Brendan Kuty reported that keeping Benintendi in left field is “a top task” of the Yankees.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported last week “the Astros continue to look at free agents Andrew Benintendi, Michael Brantley and Michael Conforto as options for their outfield.”

The New York Post’s Mike Puma reported last week “The Mets have shown interest in Andrew Benintendi as a possible corner-outfield option.”

Cutie reported last week (general manager Brian) Cashman said that the Yankees would “love” to have Benintendi back.

The Yankees traded for the 28-year-old outfielder ahead of the Aug. 2 deadline. At the time, he was among the league leaders in batting average for the Kansas City Royals and coming off his first career All-Star appearance.

But the Gold Glove Award winner didn’t exactly impress in pinstripes, hitting .254 in 33 games before being sidelined by a broken right hand.

The Yankees held out hope that he could return during the postseason, but he never made it back before New York was swept out of the American League Championship Series by the Houston Astros.
