Sean Murphy traded to Braves (source)

  • by

The Braves acquired catcher Sean Murphy from the A’s on Monday, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan was first to report the move, and a source told MLB.com’s Martín Gallegos that Murphy is heading to Atlanta as part of a three-team deal that will reportedly send catcher William Contreras to the Brewers, per Passan.

None of the three teams involved in the deal have confirmed the trade.

Murphy was one of the top names in trade rumors this offseason after slugging .426 with 18 home runs and 66 RBIs for Oakland last season. He finished with a 120 OPS+ on his way to receiving a share of down-ballot votes for the AL MVP Award.

The 28-year-old Murphy won a Gold Glove Award for his work behind the plate in 2021 and finished fourth in AL Rookie of the Year Award voting in the pandemic-shortened ’20 campaign.

Murphy is arbitration eligible in 2023 and remains under team control through the ’25 season.

As for Contreras, he hit .278 with an .860 OPS and 20 home runs in just 97 games last season. He earned his first career All-Star selection and combined with fellow Braves backstop Travis d’Arnaud to give Atlanta one of the strongest catching situations in the Majors. As a team, Atlanta received 6.4 fWAR from its catchers, third best in the big leagues behind only the Blue Jays (7.3) and Phillies (7.0).
