Sterling Insurance golf day raises £12,000 to help Archie Wilks and UK cancer charities

A Bishop’s Stortford business is chipping in with support for charities helping people battling cancer after its second fundraising golf tournament raised a total of £12,000.

And the money from the tournament organized by Sterling insurance brokers will be split between UK cancer charities and helping to fund further treatment for Archie Wilks, whose father Simon works for the company.

The inaugural Sterling Cup collected £10,000 to help send the Newport boy to America for specialist care to improve his chances of beating the disease. This year’s event ended in a celebratory mood as participants discovered that the six-year-old is now in full remission after 42 months of care.

Paul Copeland’s Team Copes exacted revenge on Rod Wellard’s Team Wellard by securing an 18-point win to taste glory in the Ryder Cup-style event at the Manor of Groves course in High Wych.

Thomas French-Dent and Dan Snowsill landed 50 points to be crowned the best pair on the day, just pipping John Crabb and Nick Parmenter (49) and the duo of Dan Woods and Stuart Crosby (48) to No 1 spot.

Peter Cook, a manager at Sterling Insurance, said: “We are super grateful to all the supporters, sponsors and participants of this year’s Sterling Cup for making the day such a success.

“The weather held off and we had a packed clubhouse of 68 golfers who had traveled up and down the country to be part of a special day. After the inaugural event was won last year by Team Wellard, it was pleasing that Team Copes had their revenge and leveled the event at one piece.”
