MLB Rumors: Red Sox interested in bringing back Christian Vazquez

Is a Christian Vazquez-Boston Red Sox reunion in the works?

Just months after trading Vazquez to the Houston Astros, Chaim Bloom and the Red Sox are interested in bringing Vazquez back home, according to ESPN’s Joon Lee.

Vazquez played 84 games for Boston last season before being sent to Houston in exchange for prospects. The 32-year-old catcher helped the Astros to a World Series title, marking the second championship of his career.

The Red Sox continued their 2022 campaign with Reese McGuire and Connor Wong as their catching tandem. Although both are under contract with Boston for the 2023 season, Bloom adds the organization is “active” on the catching market.

In eight seasons with Boston (698 games), Vazquez slashed .262/.311/.389 with 54 homers and 266 RBI. He was the starting backstop during the club’s 2018 World Series run.

Bloom and the Red Sox will have plenty of competition for Vazquez’s services. Several teams, including the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Guardians, and Arizona Diamondbacks, are reportedly interested in signing him.
