MLB Draft lottery live results: Tracking the 2023 pick order for Nationals, Athletics & other teams

Someone will hit the jackpot on Tuesday night.

MLB is taking a page out of the NBA’s book, installing a draft lottery as part of a method to curtail tanking and give bad teams a pretty equal shot of landing the top overall pick.

While the MLB Draft isn’t as sure a thing as other drafts across the major sports, getting that top selection still holds heavy benefits. This year, all three squads that have an equal shot at the top selection all have history with picking No. 1 overall. The Pirates have selected No. 1 overall five times, including in 2021 when they selected catcher Henry Davis.

The Nationals famously selected in the top spot in back-to-back years in 2009 and 2010, when they picked some guys named Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper.

For all the peaks and valleys the A’s organization has been through, they haven’t selected No. 1 overall since 1965 — when the then-Kansas City Athletics selected pitcher Rick Monday, the first-ever draft selection in MLB history.

Now, all three teams angle to start the next chapter of franchise history, and it starts on Tuesday night.
