Elon Musk said that he would create a smartphone if Twitter is banned from the Apple and Google app stores.
Podcaster Liz Wheeler first proposed the idea to Musk via Twitter: “If Apple & Google boot Twitter from their app stores, @elonmusk should produce his own smartphone. Half the country would happily ditch the biased, snooping iPhone & Android. The man builds rockets to Mars, a silly little smartphone should be easy, right?”

In a recent New York Times op-ed, Twitter’s former head of trust and safety, Joel Rothwrote about concerns he heard regarding Twitter’s future in the app stores: “Twitter will have to balance its new owner’s goals against the practical realities of life on Apple’s and Google’s internet…And as I departed the company, the calls from the app review teams had already first.”
The former Apple executive who still oversees the App Store, Phil Schillerallegedly deleted his Twitter account last week, according to CNBC.
Although neither Apple nor Google have made public announcements threatening the platform’s place in their app stores, both companies temporarily banned other platforms that allowed very loose free speech, like Parler and Truth Social.
