Mets’ Jacob deGrom has near-historic price tag, MLB insider says

  • by

Jacob deGrom is looking for the big bucks.

That’s why he opted out of his contract with the New York Mets after the world series to test free agency. So how much is the ace looking to get paid?

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports: “Jacob deGrom is said by one GM to be seeking $40 million-plus. ‘He’ll get it, he’s the best,’ that GM said.”

The goal makes sense. This time last year, his teammate Max Scherzer, signed a three-year, $130 million contract with the Mets, making him the highest-paid player in baseball at more than $43 million per year.

According to Spotrac, deGrom made $27.5 million this year.

DeGrom has expressed interest in the Texas Rangers. The Mets are reportedly considering Justin Verlander as a potential target because they feel the Rangers are serious suitors for deGrom.

Justin Verlander opted out of the final year of his contract with the Houston Astros last week to become a free agent.

The Athletic’s Will Sammon reports that the Mets recently met with Japanese free agent pitcher Kodai Senga and that it went well.

The Mets also recently made contact with starter Andrew Heaney, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon. Eppler and Heaney were with the Los Angeles Angels at the same time from 2015 to 2020.

On Friday, the Mets acquired right-hander Elieser Hernandez and reliever Jeff Brigham from the Marlins for minor-league pitcher Franklin Sanchez.
