The Angels have bolstered their infield this Friday, acquiring third baseman Gio Urshela in a trade with the Twins.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan was first to break the news that the Twins traded Urshela to the Angels in exchange for Class A right-hander Alejandro Hidalgo. This trade has been confirmed by both parties.
This is a savvy move by the Angels. Urshela, 31, is coming off a really nice season with the Twins.
In 144 games this past season, Urshela had a .285 batting average with 13 home runs and 64 RBI.
Urshela didn’t take very long to adjust to his new home in Minnesota. Prior to the start of the 2022 season, he spent multiple seasons with the Yankees.
If Urshela performs well next season, he could set himself up for a long-term extension. He’s set to be a free agent in 2024.
As for the Twins, they’ll have to hope they can develop Hidalgo into a major league pitcher.
Hidalgo has a career 4.62 ERA with 58 strikeouts in the minor leagues.
