MLB notes: Ex-Mets pitcher gets paid, former Yankees reliever in demand, Jose Trevino’s latest award

Time for a quick roundup of MLB news from over the weekend.

Astros re-sign Montero

Right-hander Rafael Montero re-signed with the Houston Astros, getting a three-year, $34.5 million contract, according to ESPN.

The 32-year-old Montero was a high-leverage arm in the Astros bullpen as Houston won its second World Series title. He posted a career-best 2.37 ERA in 71 appearances during the regular season.

Montero made his MLB debut with the Mets in 2014 and appeared in 58 games for New York before leaving as a free agent in 2018.

Ottavino in demand

CBS Sports reports Mets reliever Adam Ottavino could be in for a big payday this winter.

Ottavino has been a trusted high-leverage reliever on a postseason team each of the last five seasons. He annihilates righties and is also very durable, ranking second among all pitchers in relief appearances since 2018. Ottavino turns 37 later this month and that will likely limit him to a one-year contract, but the current market could boost his salary a bit.

Ottavino made 66 appearances this season for the Mets, posting an impressive 2.06 ERA. The right-hander posted a career-low 1.90 ERA with the New York Yankees in 2019.

Another award for Trevino

MLB announced Yankees catcher Jose Trevino is this year’s Platinum Glove Award winner in the American League. The Platinum Glove Award goes to the best defensive player in each league.

MLB.com reports Trevino is the first Yankees player and the first American League catcher to win the Platinum Glove Award since it debuted in 2011.

According to the report, the 29-year-old Trevino “led all Major League catchers with 21 defensive runs saved in 2022, which was tied for third among all position players.”

It was a season of firsts for Trevino, who also made his All-Star game debut and won his first Gold Glove Award.

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado won the Platinum Glove Award in the National League for the sixth straight season.
