Shyam Sunder Sikder, chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), on Saturday instructed mobile network operators to provide people with proper data without expiry packages.
He said Grameenphone has three packages and other operators have two packages each.
“But I am getting complaints that people are not finding a proper package that comes with data without expiry. Please look into the matter. I don’t want to get such complaints anymore.”
The BTRC chairman spoke at a session of the Bangladesh 17th Internet Governance Forum 2022.
The three-day event organized by Bangladesh Internet Governance Forum, a multi-stakeholder organization to create ideas on internet usage in Bangladesh, ended at the Cirdap Auditorium in the capital on the day.
The telecom operators in April this year rolled out “without expiry data package” under a directive of the BTRC.
However, such data packages have a validity of one year.
“People’s main concerns are centering on faster internet speed, quality of services, unlimited data packages and carry forward option for the leftover data.”
He said 5G will increase the use of the internet of things, which will establish connections between device to device and device to people.
“We have allocated 190MZ spectrum for the operators, but they need to make huge investments to utilize the spectrum.”
Bangladesh has low data speed and it will increase once 5G is introduced, he said. “But the deployment of 5G will take more time.”
