Axed LIV Golf player takes third round lead at International Series Egypt

  • by

Former US Amateur champion Andy Ogletree – who pegged it up in LIV Golf’s curtain-raiser at Centurion Club – will have the lead going into the final round of the International Series Egypt event on the Asian Tour.

Ogletree, like many before him who have won the US Amateur, was predicted to have a stellar career.

He played in The Masters with Tiger Woods but it has since been a struggle. To say his career has stalled would be an understatement.

Even Ogletree admitted as much in August when he revealed that he felt like he was at “rock bottom” when he decided to accept LIV’s invitation to play in their first $25m tournament in June.

Ogletree picked up a check for $120,000 in that tournament before all hell broke loose in the world of pro golf.

He has since been plying his trade where he can. Ogletree said he is suspended by the PGA Tour until December.

Ogletree previously said that he did not like “being grouped” with other players who chose to play in the series that is commissioned by Greg Norman.

Ogletree previously told the Fire Drill podcast:

“I didn’t like that I was grouped into this category of these guys that kind of rebelled against the Tour or chose a different path. I didn’t choose a different path, I just chose to play in a golf tournament.”

Here, he has taken the third round lead at Madinaty Golf Club. The tournament has a $1.5m prize purse.

Ogletree finished birdie-eagle to card a 5-under 65 to reach 15-under par and opened up a three-shot lead over the Austrian Bernd Wiesberger, who also has played in LIV Golf tournaments.

Another LIV Golf player and last year’s US Amateur champion James Piot is also in contention to win.
