The 2023 predictions are based mostly on Apple’s success with the M-powered MacBooks, and, to a lesser extent, on the considerable performance uplift seen by Windows-on-Arm systems sporting Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips. Chromebooks would also play a part, but not that significantly.

According to DigiTime’s estimates relying on compiled data from various sources, the Arm-based notebook market share is to rise steadily over the next few years. Just in 2020, Arm-powered laptop shipments represented only 1.4% of the broader notebook market, but by the end of 2022, the share is estimated to rise to 12.7% and the 2023 predictions would have it further increase to 13.9%. This takes into account Chromebooks and Apple notebooks, but the rise could also be attributed to the significant increase in performance for the Qualcomm Windows-on-Arm systems in a relatively short period of time.

Intel is still dominating the notebook segment, yet its market share continued to dwindle (63.9% estimated for 2023) in the past years. On the other hand, AMD’s share also rose steadily and is expected to hit the 24% mark in 2023.

During the pandemic, when governments initiated massive purchases for the education sector and remote work was also prioritized, Arm-based Chromebooks saw a sharp market share increase, but the trend massively declined this year as the pandemic eased up. By 2023, the Chromebook market would only see single-digit growth via premium device sales in the corporate market.

Apple meanwhile transitioned all of its MacBook models to Arm-based M processors, a move that offered the company an opportunity to seize more market share, which increased from 0.5% in 2019 to 11.8% in 2022. With impressive performance per Watt ratios, Apple’s rapidly evolving M processors prove that the ARM architecture can be finely tuned to provide a competitive alternative to Intel’s and AMD’s x86 solutions.
