MLB insider names 3 possible replacements for Mets’ Brandon Nimmo

The Mets may need to prepare to say goodbye to Brandon Nimmo.

The outfielder is now a free agent and starting Thursday, he will have the opportunity to talk to other teams. The 29-year-old may be done with New York.

If that’s the case, the New York Post’s Joel Sherman suggests three potential free agent options for the Mets to help fill the void.

The first is Jose Abreu. This year with the Chicago White Sox, the first baseman slashed .304/.378/.446 with 15 home runs, 40 doubles, and 75 RBI.

Sherman also suggests Michael Brantley, who missed the postseason with the Astros due to shoulder surgery. Sherman reports that he likely could be had on a one-year deal.

The last possibility given by Sherman is Joc Pederson. If the Giants don’t put the $19.65 million qualifying offer on the outfielder, the Mets could go after him.

The Mets may also look internally if Nimmo leaves. Last week, general manager Billy Eppler told Sherman and Jon Heyman of the New York Post on The Show podcast that the Mets could slide Starling Marte over to center if they lose Nimmo. “We are comfortable with [Marte] in centerfield,” he said.

The Mets announced last week Marte had surgery to repair a core muscle injury sustained in the second half of this season. According to the Mets, the typical recovery timeline for this injury is eight weeks, and he is expected to be ready to play without restriction in Spring Training.

As for Nimmo, he’s been heavily linked to the Colorado Rockies, which would be a logical landing point for the Wyoming-native.
