The New York Post’s Greg Joyce reports that Billy Eppler played a “key role” in recruiting Ohtani as the then-general manager of the Angels.

Ohtani’s contract will be up after next season. There have been rumors he could be shopped ahead of 2023 Opening Day, and the Mets have been named as a team that will go for the 2021 American League MVP.

However, SNY’s Andy Martino reported last week that the Yankees and other teams who have looked into Ohtani got the sense that “the Angels are showing no appetite to discuss Ohtani at present.” Martino also reports “the current perception from rivals is that Los Angeles is more likely to try to extend Ohtani, and, if they are unable to keep him, look to move him at July’s trade deadline.”
