Framework’s laptops are made to be modular and allow users to create the laptop that best meets their needs. This is due to the four USB4 ports along the sides of their cases and the handy assortment of expansion cards that act as dongles or adapters. Now, both the standard Framework 13.5-inch laptop and the Framework Chromebook Edition laptops are officially certified for Thunderbolt 4.
This new certification is just that: a certification. The hardware to support Thunderbolt 4 has been in the laptops since its first iteration shipped out last year. However, Framework did not pass all the rigorous tests Intel requires for Thunderbolt 4 certification. The result was that Framework’s laptops could support most Thunderbolt 4 peripherals, but the experience was rather hit or miss.
The new certification means that Framework devices should work flawlessly with 100% of Thunderbolt 4-certified accessories and peripherals. According to Framework, “This means you can plug in your Thunderbolt displays, docks, graphics enclosures, and other devices with greater confidence that everything will work properly.”
The new certification requires a firmware update to version 3.06. The update will also include security fixes and improvements for battery life. The new firmware (and Thunderbolt 4 certification) is only valid for devices with a 12th Gen Intel processor, however. Framework will post the update in the near future with instructions on how to install it for both Windows and Linux. The Chromebook Edition will bake the firmware update into a future OS update.
Machines running an 11th Gen Intel CPU will receive the security fixes and battery improvements, but they will not be Thunderbolt 4-certified.
