Mets’ Francisco Lindor selected as Marvin Miller Man of the Year

Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor has been selected by his peers as the Marvin Miller Man of the Year in the 2022 Players Choice Awards, it was announced Friday.

The award, which was created by the MLBPA in 1997, is given annually to an MLB player “whose on-field performance and contributions to his community inspire others to higher levels of achievement.”

The other finalists for the award were Marcus Semien of the Texas Rangers and Brent Suter of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Voting took place among players throughout MLB in September.

Lindor’s charitable efforts and community endeavors have included several trips he made to his native Puerto Rico to help assist with recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria, working with young people through the Make-A-Wish and Boys & Girls Clubs, and donating $1 million to Montverde Academy in Florida (Lindor’s high school) to establish the Francisco Lindor Scholarship Fund.

Marvin Millerwhom the award is named after, was the executive director of the MLBPA from 1966 to 1982 and was instrumental when it came to the end of the reserve clause in 1975, which led to the beginning of free agency.
