Yankees’ Brian Cashman’s fate is ‘100%’ decided, MLB insider says

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports “one source said it’s ‘100 percent’ Yankees general manager Brian Cashman will be back next season.”

Cashman’s current contract expires at the end of the year and he’s been under fire following the Houston Astros’ sweep of the Yankees in the American League Championship Series.

Last week, owner Hal Steinbrenner said manager Aaron Boone will return in 2023, but did not indicate what he was thinking about Cashman.

According to the Associated Press, Steinbrenner and Cashman met last week at Yankee Stadium for early discussions about the upcoming offseason. But Steinbrenner said he remained undecided on his GM.

“We haven’t talked about anything yet,” Steinbrenner said. “Cash and I had some preliminary conversations.”

Cashman has been Yankees general manager since 1998. But plenty of fingers are being pointed his way following the Yankees’ ALCS loss. The club has not appeared in the World Series since 2009, when New York won its most recent title.

We’ll learn more about Cashman’s future on Friday when he and Boone address the media in their end-of-season press conferences at Yankee Stadium.
