Brian Cashman leaving could create a worst-case scenario for the Yankees, MLB insider says

Aaron Boone will be back. Brian Cashman should return as well. But until the general manager and New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner puts pen to paper, nothing is guaranteed. And that makes this report from the New York Post’s Joel Sherman so intriguing.

I think if Cashman is not re-signed by Steinbrenner in the next few weeks, (Mets owner Steve) Cohen would be very interested in making Cashman Billy Eppler’s boss again. As another executive told me this week, “If Brian were out on the market, he’d have offers in five minutes.” This executive added that the industry holds Cashman in much higher esteem than the media who cover and the fans who cheer for the Yankees.

The Mets are in search of a new team president with Sandy Alderson ready to step back from his duties. Cashman moving from the Bronx to Queens would be a seismic shift for baseball in the Big Apple.

But if we are reading the tea leaves correctly, Steinbrenner won’t let it come to that. Per the Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham:

Hal Steinbrenner has said Aaron Boone will be back as manager. The same apparently is true for GM Brian Cashman.

Last week, Steinbrenner said Boone will return in 2023, despite New York getting swept by the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series.

However Steinbrenner did not announce a decision about the fate of Cashman, whose contract expires this year.

According to the Associated Press, Steinbrenner and Cashman met one week ago at Yankee Stadium for early discussions about the upcoming offseason. But Steinbrenner said he remained undecided on his GM.

“We haven’t talked about anything yet,” Steinbrenner said. “Cash and I had some preliminary conversions.”

Cashman has been Yankees general manager since 1998. But plenty of fingers are being pointed his way following the Yankees’ ALCS loss. The club has not appeared in the World Series since 2009, when New York won its most recent title.
