MLB insider pitches 3 All-Stars as Yankees free-agent targets

To spend or not to spend, that is the question facing New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner.

If, as expected, he retains Brian Cashman, the general manager will need some money from Steinbrenner to improve upon a roster which was swept by the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series.

Fansided’s Robert Murray says three All-Stars should be on Cashman’s radar once the Yankees re-sign outfielder Aaron Judge.

They could use another frontline starting pitcher, with Justin Verlander and Carlos Rodon being two free-agent possibilities (if they opt out of their contracts, as expected). They could use another outfielder, with Pirates star Bryan Reynolds being among the players they have checked in on in the past.

The 39-year-old Verlander is the leading contender for the American League Cy Young Award after posting a career-best 1.75 ERA. Rodon won a career-high 14 games in 2022. Reynolds hit a career-best 27 home runs this season.

Murray also suggests the Yankees need a shortstop, something which became obvious after watching Isiah Kiner-Falefa struggle in the playoffs. But Murray believes the Yankees will pass on free agents such as Carlos Correa and Trea Turner, and instead opt to go with Anthony Volpe, the Yankees’ top prospect and the No. 5 prospect overall, according to MLB Pipeline.
