The Bronx Bombers made it all the way to the American League Championship Series but unraveled and quickly lost to the Houston Astros in four games.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan had some things to say about the Yankees’ fall, and what it means for the future of the club.

Via “First Take“:

They got outclassed. They didn’t just get beaten, they got beaten down. And the Houston Astros have been a better team than the Yankees for going on five years now, but this was a different level. This was a sweep. This was an embarrassment. This was the Yankees being shown that they’re not just not on the Astros level, they aren’t even close now. And the fact that Aaron Judge is a free agent right now, the fact that the Yankees still have a payroll that’s upwards of $200 million. If they go out and add to that, it’s going to take it to levels that they haven’t been comfortable going to. And when you see what’s going on in Queens right now, when you see the New York Mets are the highest spending team in baseball, and that they’ve got to go out and bring Jacob deGrom back, get Edwin Diaz back, Brandon Nimmo, on and on. The Mets could have a payroll in excess of $300 million next year. And the question that Yankees fans are asking among many now is: why are the Mets more like the Yankees than the Yankees?

All-Star outfielder Aaron Judge will become a free agent after the World Series. He’ll come at a high price considering he set a new American League record with 62 home runs and contended for the Triple Crown, making him the leading candidate for American League MVP. If the Yankees want to hold onto the type of talent for which Mets owner Steve Cohen is willing to pay handsomely, they’ll need to step out of their comfort zone.
