The San Francisco 49ers bolstered their running back room with the addition of All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey this week. With Elijah Mitchell sidelined with an MCL sprain since Week 1, Jeff Wilson Jr. has been carrying the load on offense. He leads the team with 400 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns and is averaging nearly five yards per carry.
The addition of McCaffrey doesn’t change how Wilson feels about the 49ers’ group of backs, though. After practice on Friday, a reporter asked if he felt San Francisco boasts the best running back room in the NFL.
“No doubt,” Wilson answered. “I mean, we felt that way before Christian got here, so with adding him, we feel that way even more now. … We’ve got the best group in the NFL.”
McCaffrey arrived in Santa Clara about an hour before the 49ers kicked off their Friday practice, the last of the week. He passed his physical, making the trade official, and then suited up to join his new teammates on the practice field. McCaffrey’s status for Sunday is still unclear. There’s a lot to learn before he can be thrown into a game.
“He’s a vet,” Wilson said. “I know he’s a smart player. That’s why he’s been in the league and been in the position that he’s had in his entire life, even at Stanford. I used to watch him. Coming out of college, I used to try to pace myself to keep up with him. … Just to have him here, he’s going to bring a lot to the table.”
Wilson knows that whenever the dynamic running back gets on the football field, it will add yet another weapon to an offense capable of being among the most explosive in the league.
“He’s an electrifying player,” Wilson said. “… Just to have that player, he’s a big help.”
There is also the trust in head coach Kyle Shanahan, who admitted that once he learned of the trade for McCaffrey, he considered redoing portions of the game plan.
“I know Kyle is a mastermind,” Wilson told reporters. “He’s a wizard. So he’s up there working, and coming together, and coming up with all types of things. So we just leave that up to him, and we’ll just be ready to ball it, and do what we were born to do.”

Jeff Wilson: 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo one of the greatest QBs in the game, doesn’t get enough credit
The San Francisco 49ers signed Jeff Wilson Jr. as an undrafted free agent in 2018, so all he’s known is playing with Jimmy Garoppolo. The running back has no shortage of confidence in his quarterback of the past four-plus years and feels Garoppolo is always short-changed when it comes to handing out praise. “Jimmy is Jimmy,” Wilson told 95.7 The Game’s Damon Bruce and John Dickinson on Wednesday. “He’s one of the greatest quarterbacks in this game right now. He doesn’t get enough respect. He doesn’t get enough credit.” Wilson added, “He’s very underrated. I wish I could just change it all for him because he’s really a great dude and a great quarterback.” Trey Lance’s season-ending ankle injury set the stage for Garoppolo’s return to the starting lineup
Brandon Aiyuk on 49ers: ‘We have yet to play our best game’
The San Francisco 49ers have played their best games of the season over the last two weeks. They outscored the Los Angeles Rams and the Carolina Panthers by a combined score of 61-24. The Niners hope to emerge from their two-game East Coast road trip with a 4-2 record. They’ll need to knock off the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday to do that. The offense looks much improved compared to the unit we saw in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos. However, one 49ers player believes fans haven’t seen anything yet. “Just little things we’ve got to clean up,” wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk told reporters after Friday’s practice. “We’ve yet to play a perfect game. We talk about it in the
‘I felt at my best’: George Kittle discusses his return to football shape, 49ers vs. Falcons
George Kittle now has three games under his belt since returning from a groin injury. Things are starting to feel normal again for the San Francisco 49ers tight end. He had his best game of the season on Sunday, catching five passes for 47 yards. Although, he did get dinged for the fumble loss, his first since Week 9 of the 2021 season. Most expected an acclimation period. While some wondered about Kittle’s lack of production since his return, the coaches knew the tight end wouldn’t start taking over games immediately. “The more Kittle is out there and healthy, the more he practices, the more he can get back in the routine, I think that stuff will take
49ers Mailbag: Will San Francisco trade for a corner? What’s wrong with special teams? Should Kyle Shanahan have pulled the starters earlier in Carolina?
The San Francisco 49ers are in West Virginia preparing for a trip to Atlanta to play the Falcons on Sunday, while simultaneously recovering from a number of injuries in Carolina last week. Emmanuel Moseley was lost for the season with an ACL tear. Nick Bosa also left the game early, but his injury does not appear to be that serious. Jimmie Ward returned…for one play. Then he broke his hand. As a form of comfort, and maybe a little therapy, we opened up the 49ers mailbag to find out what questions and thoughts were heavy on the minds of fans. Let’s get to the mailbox and see if we can help out a few distressed fans. With Eli Mitchell still on IR and Tevin Coleman back, when will Jordan Mason get some touches and why wouldn’t Shanahan give Mason some touches
