While the ThinkPad X1 already features a decent folding screen, Lenovo is willing to explore other flexible panel solutions such as the rollable display alternative that is perhaps more aesthetically pleasing, although could prove more expensive to implement at first.

For all intents and purposes, rollable screens seem to be a great alternative to foldable screens. Both technologies are based on more or less the same flexible panels, yet foldables already have the advantage of a higher adoption rate and reduced implementation costs. On the other hand, rollables are not plagued by screen crease issues, offering an overall better experience. Up until now, we have seen a few smartphone concepts with rollable screens, but it looks like Lenovo wants to experiment with this technology on laptops, too, as the company presented a ThinkPad model with vertically-expanding screen at the Lenovo Tech World 22 event .

President of Lenovo’s Intelligent Device Group, Luca Rossi stated that form-factor innovation is an important aspect for the company and “the possibilities of a rollable laptop are also compelling.” The technology could bring a superior experience for multitasking, browsing and mobility applications on Lenovo laptops.

The exact size of the laptop and screen have not been provided. Tom’s Hardware suggests that the laptop concept appears similar to the ThinkPad X1 2022 with a 16.3-inch 2024 x 2460 fully extended display and close to 12-inch retracted form-factor. Hopefully, Lenovo will provide detailed specs at CES 2023 in a few months.
