Whoever said children can’t make a difference because of their age hasn’t yet met 8-year-old Teddy Tendler.
Through an act of kindness, the Bucks County, Pa. girl is making an impact in her community by donating laptops to people who are in need.
So, you may be wondering how an 8-year-old thought of something so worthwhile. Well, according to 6ABC, it all started at Tendler’s Hebrew school, Congregation Kol Emet in Yardley, where she was assigned to do a good deed. When it came time to think of what she could do, Tendler immediately thought of her own favorite toy – her laptop.
“Technology, doing good things for people. Put them together and I feel like donating computers would make that,” Teddy said.
Combining her love of math and computers and the desire to complete the good deed, the little girl recruited her parents and decided on the idea of donating laptops to the Family Service Association of Bucks County, which operates an emergency homeless shelter.
“We got five, plus a printer, plus paper, plus ink, some headphones. And then had to spare for a cash donation as well,” said Jared Tendler, Teddy’s dad.
According to 6ABC, the family raised over $1,700 since then, where the laptops are for both homeless kids and adults.
“Whether it be for school. Whether it be for education. Whether it be for just playing a game and being a kid. It can make a huge difference,” said Anne Marie Richards, the volunteer and development coordinator for Family Service.
According to 6ABC, to gain a different perspective of people who are less fortunate and view a world different than her own, Tendler’s parents had her walk through the shelter when her parents took her there to drop off the laptops. To Tendler, it’s an experience she’ll never forget.
“My heart was like, it felt so warm and it was so exciting that it was actually coming together,” she said.
Ever since then, Tendler felt the urge to donate once again to Family Service Association for their back-to-school drive and has seemingly found a passion in giving back to those who are in great need.
A hometown hero, indeed.
