2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Betting Preview

The PGA Tour heads eight hours North from Torrey Pines to Pebble Beach along the beautiful Monterey coastline for this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The field lacks star power with just seven of the top 50 players in the world rankings playing the three course rotation. Still, plenty of golf odds and betting opportunities to take a shot at with players shooting for birdies and the top prize of $1.6 million from an increased prize pool of $9 million.

Most top golfers are taking a week off ahead of next week’s Phoenix Open and massive $20 million prize pool. That popular event is played during Super Bowl week in nearby Glendale, AZ. But plenty of celebrities and amateurs take their swings alongside the pros at Pebble Beach making this a fun event to watch and wager on with FanDuel brand ambassador Jordan Spieth heading the field.

The last seven editions of the tournament have seen a winning score from 17 to 19 under par. Jordan Spieth won the event in 2017. The four-time major winner has also finished top-10 each of the last three years including T-3 in 2021 and runner-up in 2022 when he made a hole-in-one and also this hole-out eagle.

When marketing the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, product (the item or service), price (what the consumer pays), promotion (the marketing communications), and the place (the location) are keys to a successful campaign. The Monterey Peninsula’s premier Par 72 golf courses are the attraction, and two weeks to tee-off has arrived.

The Pebble Beach event promotional materials indicated that while much of the tournament remains devoted to the world-class golf professionals who compete each year, “the heart and soul of tournament week on the Monterey Peninsula are the celebrity icons – Bing Crosby, Jack Lemmon, Clint Eastwood, Bill Murray – whose legendary antics inside and outside the ropes account for the tournament’s continued popularity and ardent following worldwide.”

Notable Celebrities

Some of this year’s notable celebrities include NFL QB’s Aaron Rodgers and Josh Allen, seaside native and Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera, country music star Jake Owen, sports broadcaster Chris Myers and legendary actor and famed Caddyshack film comedian Bill Murray.

Also, former NFL stars Steve Young, Alex Smith, Larry Fitzgerald, former NBA star Pau Gasol, former San Francisco Giants MLB star Buster Posey join rapper and songwriter Macklemore (Ben Haggerty) and country music singer and songwriter Eric Church at Pebble Beach. Also, actors, directors and comedians trying to chip-in for birdie include Jason Bateman, Chris O’Donnell, Josh Duhamel and Ray Romano with the full list of celebrities all adding to the fun and festive event.

While many celebrities are outside their comfort zone and element playing alongside PGA Tour pros, even the games best players have nervous moments on the golf course.

Jordan Spieth said “That was by far the most nerve wracking shot I’ve ever hit in my life,” when he stood over this cliffhanger at last year’s Pebble Beach Pr0-Am.

Golf Courses

Description by Vegas Stats & Information Network (VSiN)

Pebble Beach Golf Links is one of the game’s most iconic courses. The par-72, 6,972-yard coastal layout features nine holes played by the Pacific Ocean. Pebble Beach is the second-shortest annual course on the PGA Tour. It is also heavily bunkered (118) and wind can definitely affect scoring on this exposed track. The Poa/Ryegrass fairways are the seventh-widest on the PGA Tour at an average of 40.7 yards. The Poa Annua greens are the smallest on tour (Ave. 3,500 square feet) and slower (approx. 10.5 stimpmeter) to keep the amateurs from posting too many high scores. Pebble Beach has been part of this event’s rotation since 1947 and typically plays as the hardest layout of the week.

Due to the angular hole layouts, Pebble Beach concedes the shortest average driving distance on tour, forcing layups on many holes off the tee and almost completely removing any advantage for longer hitters. The emphasis on approach shots is even higher this week, with the course yielding some of the lowest Greens In Regulation percentages on tour.

Spyglass Hill Golf Course is a par-72, 7,041-yard tree-lined track. The Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design is still the fifth-shortest of the courses played annually on the PGA Tour. It has substantially more protection from the wind than Pebble Beach but can play more difficult. Poa Annua greens await the players here as well, but they are larger (5,000 square feet) and slower (10 stimpmeter) than the ones at Pebble Beach.

Monterey Peninsula Country Club is a par-71, 6,957-yard course that is more of a coastal/links setup like Pebble Beach. Monterey typically plays the easiest of the three golf courses. The fairways are a Bentgrass/Fescue mix and play into Poa Annua greens that average 6,000 square feet and roll to about 10.5 on the stimpmeter.
