2022 – Soccer Off to Solid Start

Seattle University men’s soccer wrapped up the 2022 preseason with a 3-0 win over Oregon State on August 19. The win put the Redhawks at 2-0 in the preseason after taking down Gonzaga 2-1, on the previous Sunday.

The Redhawks jumped all over the Beavers from the kickoff, when in the first minutes, Habib Barry put one past the Oregon State keeper in the first minute to take the instant lead. Despite several more high-quality looks, the Redhawks would head to the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage.

“That was another very good test in the preseason, playing a top 10 team that went to the Elite 8 last year,” said Coach Pete Fewing. “OSU is organized and disciplined, tough and talented.”

Seattle U now sets their sights on opening the regular season with a six-game road trip, kicking off with a battle against #4 Notre Dame on Thursday, August 25, in South Bend, Ind. In all, the Redhawks will play four of the Top 10 teams in the nation on this opening road swing.

The Redhawks will make their return to Championship Field on Sunday, September 25, when they host Loyola Marymount. The following home match will be the start of conference play when Houston Baptist comes to town.

Seattle U women’s soccer soared to their first win of the season as they took down Fresno State, 2-0, August 21 at Championship Field. The Redhawks secured their second consecutive shutout in the win.

The Redhawks, who were kept off the scoreboard in the season opener, would not be denied on that night. After several quality opportunities were thwarted by the offsides flag, SU was finally able to cleanly break through to take the win.

“It was an incredibly tough and physical game and we showed up to play,” said Coach Julie Woodward. “Our back line was solid and defended extremely well leading to another shut out.”

The women next play two games in Hawaii (August 25 & August 27) before returning home to play Washington State University on September 1, which is also “Alumni Night.”
