Yankees takeaways from Thursday’s game against Cardinals, including Nestor Cortes’ clean start

The Yankees tied with the St. Louis Cardinals, 1-1, on Thursday afternoon.

Here are some key takeaways…

Nestor Cortes, making his third start this spring, was on his game. The lefty breezed through his first three innings of work, allowing just one hit with six strikeouts and no walks.

Cortes went 4.0 shutout innings, throwing 66 pitches (47 strikes) while allowing just two hits and striking out seven Cardinals without a walk.

Oswaldo Cabrera continues to put together a strong spring. Batting from the right side, Cabrera slammed a fourth-inning solo homer off of Steven Matzgiving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

Cabrera went 1-for-3 at the plate and is now hitting .302 this spring.

Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza were both in the starting lineup, with Volpe starting at short and Peraza at second. Volpe went 0-for-4 with a strikeout, and Peraza also went hitless, going 0-for-3 with a punchout.

Ron Marinaccio gave the Yankees two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out three with one walk. Marinaccio now has a spring ERA of 1.42 and figures to be a key piece of the Bombers’ bullpen.
