Yankees interested in ex-Mets outfielder, MLB insider says

In an ideal world, both Aaron Judge and Andrew Benintendi would return to the New York Yankees next season.

The worst-case scenario has both free-agent outfielders fleeing the Bronx.

So general manager Brian Cashman is leaving nothing to chance.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports the “Yankees are believed on the list of teams to visit on Brandon Nimmo. Fit is somewhat curious though, unless the unthinkable happens and Judge leaves. Giants, Rays, Jays and of course Mets thought involved.”

Last week, Heyman reported “The Giants, Rays and Blue Jays are among many teams in on Brandon Nimmo, plus the Mets, of course.” Heyman also reports the New York Yankees have been “in contact with Brandon Nimmo, too, but he’s expensive enough that he’d likely only be in play if (Aaron) Judge were to leave.”

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported the Blue Jays make sense for Nimmo following Toronto’s deal which sent All-Star outfielder Teoscar Hernandez to the Seattle Mariners.

Two weeks ago, SNY’s Andy Martino reported that Nimmo is meeting personally with teams and that several teams have expressed that they would move their centerfielder to a corner for Nimmo. Martino reports that the list of interested clubs includes the Mets, Yankees, Colorado Rockies and Blue Jays “and that is far from a complete accounting.”

The Yankees’ interest makes sense, according to the Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham: “Once you get past Judge, Nimmo is the best outfielder available. His .388 OBP the last five seasons is a big part of that. Scouts also feel that Nimmo still has room to improve entering his age-30 season. He’s potentially a good value.”
