Who should be the Des Moines Register’s Athletes of the Week for May 21-27?

This past week of Iowa high school athletics saw state champions crowned in boys golf for Classes 1A, 2A and 3A and all four classes in girls golf.

State boys and girls tennis teams also produced their singles and doubles state champions in both 1A and 2A. The boys and girls state soccer tournament fields were set with the conclusion of substate and regional play.

The 2023 softball season began May 22, and baseball started its second week of competition.

Here are the Register’s male and female Athlete of the Week nominees for May 21-27. Register readers can vote for the winners and they will be announced at the end of the week.

Girls

Morgan Rupp, Linn-Mar

Rupp was the individual medalist at the 2023 Class 4A girls state golf tournament held at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny Thursday and Friday.

Rupp shot an 18-hole score of 70 each day to finish with a two-under-par score of 140 over 36 holes. She edged Cedar Rapids Washington’s Jane Petersen for the individual state title after Petersen shot a 141.

Eden Lohrbach, Gilbert

Lohrbach picked up her second individual girls golf state championship in three years during the 3A girls state golf tournament held at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls on Thursday and Friday.

Lohrbach carded a 70 Thursday and a 73 Friday to finish with a one-under score of 143 over 36 holes. She won medalist by five strokes over Clear Lake’s Rebecca DeLong and also helped Gilbert claim the 3A team championship.

Chloe Bolte, Sumner-Fredericksburg

Bolte earned the 2A state medalist in girls golf for the second year in a row.

Bolte shot a 10-over 152 over 36 holes at the 2A girls golf state tournament at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown. She carded a 75 Thursday and 77 Friday to end up winning by an impressive 10-stroke margin.

Andrea Porubcin, Bettendorf

Porubcin won the 2A girls tennis state singles championship held Friday and Saturday at the University of Iowa Tennis Center in Iowa City.

Porubcin went 4-0 during the 2A state singles tournament. She defeated Ankeny Centennial’s Abbie Peterson during the finals in straight sets, 7-5 and 7-6.

Sophia Fain, Waterloo Columbus

Fain earned the 1A girls tennis singles championship Saturday at the Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo.

Fain swept all three of her opponents during the 1A state singles tournament Thursday and Friday. She scored a pair of 6-0 shutouts over Pella’s Emily Blom in the championship match.

Boys

Judd Jirovsky, Grundy Center

Jirovsky won medalist at the 2A boys state golf meet with a record-low score May 22 and 23 at the Coldwater Golf Links in Ames.

Jirovsky shot an amazing 11-under score of 131 over 36 holes. He finished 11 strokes ahead of the rest of the 2A field in helping Grundy Center claim the 2A boys team championship.

Mikey Takacs, Regina Catholic

Takacs won medalist in a thriller at the 1A boys state golf meet held at the Ames Golf and Country Club May 22 and 23.

Takacs claimed the 1A individual title by winning a playoff with Hamburg freshman Keith Thompson. Takacs and Thompson both shot a six-over 148 over the two days to outlast the rest of the 1A field by four strokes.

Roman Roth, Washington

Roth earned medalist at the 3A boys state golf meet in decisive fashion.

Roth shot a two-under 143 over 36 holes at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames May 22 and 23. He finished eight strokes ahead of MOC-Floyd Valley’s Davis Korver for the individual championship.

Kaden Taylor, Waukee Northwest

Taylor won the 2A boys state tennis singles tournament held Friday and Saturday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center in Iowa City.

Taylor swept Ankeny Centennial’s Caleb Peterson in the finals Saturday with a pair of 6-3 victories. Taylor went 4-0 during the tournament.

Caden Branum, Decorah

Branum won the 1A boys state tennis singles tournament held Friday and Saturday at the Byrnes Park Tennis Center in Waterloo.

Branum went 4-0 during the tournament with three sweeps. He defeated Charlie LeGrand of Cedar Rapids Xavier in the finals with a 6-4, 6-1 sweep.
