The Best Cyber Monday Laptop Deals

  • by

Cyber Monday is one of the best times of the year to shop for tech—and to snag a great laptop at a bargain price. This is your chance to shop for the best deals from the comfort of your own home (while recovering from that big Thanksgiving meal!)—so you won’t want to miss out. What you’ll find now are laptops with high-end specs like fast processors and big, bright screens at steeper than usual discounts.

Before clicking ‘buy’ and grabbing the first deal you see, take a few moments to decide how you’ll use your laptop. If all you’re doing is browsing the web and handling light word processing, then any laptop on our list should fit your needs. However, if you’re a gamer, the software you’ll use typically demands more expensive hardware than a basic laptop. Look for at least 16 gigabytes of RAM and at least a 15-inch screen. For those who watch lots of movies on their laptops, the screen size is also crucial. To view content comfortably, you’ll also want a screen of at least 15 inches.

The Expert: I’m a technology journalist who’s written for dozens of publications, including The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The Guardian. I’m also a laptop fanatic. I’ve owned more than a dozen laptops over the last decade, and I’m always on the hunt for the next best thing. My laptop is my constant companion. In fact, I’m writing this article on a 16-inch MacBook Pro M1. I generally prefer working on Macs, although I dabble in Windows just to keep things lively.

How We Evaluated Laptops

Choosing the right laptop can be a challenging experience as there are dozens of specifications to not only sort through but understand. Sometimes, it feels like you need to be a computer scientist just to figure out what manufacturers are talking about. Here’s the thing, though. The secret sauce is that you can ignore most of the hype. Almost any laptop currently on the market will be suitable for basic word processing and watching streaming videos. The gaming laptops on our list can handle all but the most demanding titles.

I spent more than a dozen hours sifting through specifications and reviews to write these reviews. I also own several laptops on this list, including Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 4 and Go 2. I’ve spent lots of hands-on time with all the MacBooks I reviewed below and worked on the HP Envy x360 2-in-1.

I own the Surface Laptop 4 and it’s my favorite portable, tied with the MacBook Pro (also included here in my recommendations). The Surface 4 is light, sleek, and fast enough to run almost any program. The trackpad is responsive and accurate, qualities that can be hard to find in most Windows laptops. I also love the keyboard, which has just the right amount of feedback, yet is quiet enough for when you’re working in a library or open office space.

As the owner of a Surface Laptop Go 2, I heartily recommend this model. It’s my go-to computer when I travel and want something that’s as light as a MacBook Air, but runs Windows programs, too. The Go 2 has Microsoft’s usual stunning build quality, another perk. This Go 2 is fast enough for browsing the web, creating simple documents, and watching Netflix, but it’s certainly no speed demon.

I’m a longtime owner of the previous model of this convertible which easily switches from a tablet to a laptop—and I’ve come to appreciate its clever design with a built-in stand and optional keyboard cover. I spent some time recently playing with the Surface Pro 8 and came away impressed with its speed upgrades. Microsoft hasn’t changed up the design of the Surface Pro lineup for years and that’s a good thing since all the wrinkles have been worked out.

The MacBook Air is the standard by which almost all other laptops are measured, so perfectly has Apple married form and function. The Air is light and thin, yet it packs Apple’s latest M2 processor, which makes it unbelievably fast when launching apps or running demanding software. The battery life is also superb, measuring more than 12 hours in my casual tests. There’s no reason to look elsewhere for a laptop unless you need a larger screen or a gaming rig.

For a slightly faster processor than the MacBook Air, consider the M2. This version of the MacBook Pro packs a screen that’s slightly larger than the Air’s. The latest Apple M2 chip is standard with this model and it allows you to speed through any computing tasks. It’s hard to make a case that this MacBook Pro is better than the significantly cheaper Air for most buyers. On the other hand, having a faster processor never hurts.

The IdeaPad 1i is the cheapest laptop I can comfortably recommend for most people. The Core i5 processor isn’t the fastest but it gets the job done for web browsing and scrolling through spreadsheets. The 15.6-inch monitor is impressively large for the price and represents colors reasonably well. Best of all, this model packs Lenovo’s usual excellent keyboard and decent build quality.

I have spent dozens of hours using this HP Envy and have come to admire its solid build quality and generously proportioned keyboard. I’ve cranked out six articles on deadline while using this machine, and it’s never let me down with a sluggish performance. I wouldn’t use this budget model for playing high-end games, but when I’m ready to quit for the day, the Envy makes it easy to switch into tablet mode to watch some streaming videos.

The sleek but not entirely boring design of this HP Pavilion denotes its status as a laptop that can do equal duty on your couch or in the office. The screen is big enough so that you won’t have to squint at spreadsheets, but it’s also bright and vibrant for watching reruns. The Core i7 gets the job done for most computing tasks as long as you don’t try to run heavy-duty programs like those intended for movie editing or gaming.

Save some cash and go with Apple’s previous generation MacBook Air, which is a great deal and more than enough computer for most users. This year’s M2 processor is a speedboat over the M1 on paper. However, I have tested out both the M1 and M2 MacBook Airs and found the difference in real life between the two processors is nearly impossible to distinguish. The M1 model of the Air sports the same tried-and-true sleek design of the current model.
