Sinton senior Blake Mitchell continued to pad his resume by being named the Gatorade Texas Baseball Player of the Year for the second consecutive season on Friday.
Mitchell, who can do virtually everything on the baseball field, has helped lead the defending Class 4A state champion Pirates to a 35-2 record and back to the Region IV-4A final where they were facing Boerne this week.
Mitchell is hitting .471 with six home runs and 41 RBI this season. The Pirates’ catcher has also scored 47 runs and has stolen 35 stolen bases with an on-base percentage of .692 in 37 games.
As a pitcher this season, Mitchell has struck out 19 batters in nine innings with a 2.33 earned-run average.
Mitchell becomes the first Coastal Bend player since Refugio’s Jared Kelley to win the award in consecutive seasons.
Mitchell, who signed a letter of intent to play baseball at LSU, is projected as an early-round selection in July’s Major League Baseball draft.
