Okemos star shortstop and pitcher Caleb Bonemer has been selected as the state’s top player this spring.
Bonemer was named the Gatorade player of the year in Michigan on Friday. The junior is a finalist to be named the national player of the year by Gatorade, which will be announced later this month.
The 6-foot-1 and 198 pound Bonemer has had a large role in another strong season for Okemos, which is 20-4-1. The Wolves finished as the CAAC Blue runner-up and reached the Diamond Classic semifinals this season behind Bonemer, who is batting .541 with eight home runs, 35 RBI and 15 stolen bases.
Bonemer, who is a Virginia commit, is rated as the nation’s No. 49 prospects in the 2024 class by Perfect Game USA.
The Gatorade statewide player of the year awards recognize athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. Bonemer joins a list of big names who have previously earned the award in Michigan.
Brock Porter from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s won the award the last two seasons and is currently in the Texas Rangers organization after being drafted last year. Former MLB star Derek Jeter is also a previous recipient of the award.
