The Oaks Christian School boys golf team rolled into the next round in its quest to play for a state title and three local players advanced in individual play with strong rounds at the CIF-Southern Section Individual Championship & SCGA Qualifying Tournament on Thursday at River Ridge Golf Club’s Vineyard Course in Oxnard.
Oaks Christian shot a team-record total of 9-under-par 351 to win the tournament title and move onto the CIF/SCGA Southern State Regional Championship this Thursday at Los Serranos Golf Course. The Lions, who finished third in the CIF-SS Division 1 tournament last Monday, were led by senior Nick Waldock, who fired a 6-under 66 to finish second overall as an individual and three shots back of individual champion Matthew Robles of Warren. Freshman Graham Christopher shot a career-best 68, freshman Max Emberson finished with a 69 and junior Jared Abercrombie had a 73 for the Lions, who won the tournament by five shots over Loyola.
Buena High sophomore Brady McHenry fired a 3-under 69, Hillcrest Christian-Thousand Oaks sophomore Trey Tuyo shot a 71 and Thousand Oaks High senior Gavin McCormick shot an even-par 72 as all three advanced to the regional state qualifier.
Agoura, which won the CIF-SS Division 3 title on Monday, finished 11th as a team. Dale Capewell shot a 74 and Cooper Greenwood, Ryan Arnold and Elijah Gallo each finished with a 76 for the Chargers.
The regional state qualifier serves as the final step before the state championship, which will be played on May 31 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.
