The Mets lost to the Washington Nationals, 5-0, on Tuesday afternoon as their spring training slate continued.
Here are the takeaways…
– David Petersonin a battle with Taylor Megill for the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation, was almost perfect.
In four hitless innings, Peterson’s only blemish was a walk. He struck out five and was basically on cruise control throughout, as his spring training ERA stayed at 0.00.
It was Peterson’s first start since being hit in the foot by a batted ball on March 5. He exited that game early, but suffered only a bruise.
– Brett Baty had another strong day in the field but a quiet day at the plate. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout.
– Francisco Alvarez started at catcher and smoked a single to right field his second time up. He finished 1-for-2.
– Mark Vientos had a rough day at the dish, striking out three times.
– Starling Marte made his return to the lineup two days after getting hit in the helmet by a pitch. Marte tested negative for a concussion shortly after. He played right field and went 0-for-2.
– John Curtiss, who likely has a relief role locked up, had another impressive outing despite allowing a run on an infield hit. He struck out two.
– Sam Coonrod, making a push for one of the final spots in the bullpen, was spotless in his inning of work. He struck out one.
