The Mets recently gauged Carlos Beltran’s interest in joining the team’s coaching staff, according to a report from the New York Post’s Mike Puma.
However, Beltran indicated he was not interested in taking on that type of role with the team, Puma reported.
The Mets hired Beltran to be the team’s manager in Nov. 2019 to replace Mickey Callawaybut when the former All-Star was the only player to be named in the 2020 report by Major League Baseball about the 2017 Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, the team decided to dismiss him as manager before the start of the 2020 season.
In Sept. 2022, Francisco Lindor and Edwin Diaz both made it clear they would want Beltran to rejoin the organization.
“Would I like him to be with the team?” Lindor said. “Of course. One hundred percent.”
Diaz responded the same way: “Of course. He knows so much about baseball. He can help the youngest players to develop. He was one of the best players in baseball. I think he should be in the Hall of Fame.”
Both players were clear they were not advocating for Beltran to replace manager Buck Showalterwho would go on to win the NL Manager of the Year award in his first season with the club.
Beltran has not held a position in baseball since he retired after the 2017 season. He had served as a special advisor to Yankees GM Brian Cashman in 2018.
