Men’s Golf Rises to Fifth at Trinity Forest Invitational

DALLAS – The University of Houston Men’s Golf program used a strong finish in the Second Round of the Trinity Forest Invitational on Monday to surge into a tie for fifth place at Trinity Forest Golf Club.

Led by super senior Braxton Watkins’ 69, the Cougars played the final five holes at -10 with 11 birdies as well as an eagle from junior Santiago De La Fuente. With that performance, Houston surged into a tie for fifth with SMU “B” with a two-day score of 5-under 571 on the 7,372-yard, par-72 course.

Braxton Watkins, Trinity Forest Invitational, Second-Round recapWatkins enjoyed a solid start with three straight birdies off No. 1 to start the Second Round and added his fourth birdie on the front nine on the par-4 sixth hole. Despite a double bogey and a bogey over his next six holes, the Winthrop, Ark., native rallied with two birdies in a three-hole stretch on Nos. 14 and No. 16 to finish with a 68 and was tied for sixth at 5-under 139.

Senior Marcus Wochner finished with a 70 and was tied for 19th at 215. Following a birdie on the par-5 second hole, Wochner endured back-to-back bogeys early in his Second Round but quickly returned to red numbers with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 6-7.

The Holte, Denmark, native added additional birdies on No. 14 and No. 16 before ending the day with consecutive pars.

Sophomore Wolfgang Glawe drained three birdies in a four-hole stretch late on his back nine and finished with an even-par 72 to tie for 53rd at 148. Senior Austin Reilly also finished with a 72 in the Second Round and was tied for 82n.d at 153, while De La Fuente was tied for 19th at 143. Playing as an individual, redshirt freshman Reuben Lindsay was tied for 82n.d at 153.

Little Rock continued to stand atop the team leaderboard at 561 to finish one shot ahead of host SMU. Baylor (563), Furman (565) completed the Top Five with UTSA (574), Florida Atlantic (579), North Texas (581) and Sam Houston (581) completing the Top 10.

SMU’s Nathan Petronzio and Furman’s Will Morlan held the individual lead at 9-under 135 while Little Rock’s Matteo Cristoni stood in third at 136. Vicente Marzilio (North Texas) and Christian Fanfelle (UTSA) were tied for fourth at 138, while Watkins joined Zach Kingsland (SMU) and Jonas Appel (Baylor) in a tie for sixth at 139.

The tournament concludes with the Final Round teeing off Tuesday morning.

For Tuesday’s Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Furman and SMU (B).

Reily starts the day for Houston at 9:20 am, Tuesday, off No. 1 with Glawe (9:30 am), Wochner, (9:40 am), De La Fuente (9:50 am) and Watkins (10 am) following. Lindsay tees off No. 10 at 10:55 am, Tuesday.
