MUSKEGON – The Kent City boys soccer program celebrated its first-ever Central State Activities Association Bronze championship last week thanks to a 4-0 win over Newaygo.

One of the impact performers for the Eagles during the match was senior forward Dylan Sutton, who tallied two goals to help his squad improve to 10-1-2 on the season and share the league title with Grant and Big Rapids.

The big-time performance is nothing new for Sutton, who has been the team’s leading goal scorer all season with 18 goals and five assists, including a four-goal outing against Lakeview the week before. He’s also proven to be the tone setter for the rest of the club and he’s helped Kent City head coach Pedro Sanchez establish a championship culture throughout the entire program.

“Dylan Sutton has been a spark for our soccer team,” Sanchez told MLive. “Having spent a season solely playing football, he’s brought over some of that tenacity from the gridiron only for the soccer pitch. He’s currently tied for our leading scorer on the season with 18 goals and five assists.

“Part of what has made Dylan have such a great season is his quick speed, matched with his no-quit attitude. He’s the type of player you wish you could clone and have many of them out there. Dylan’s been instrumental in this historic season we’re having at Kent City going 10-1-2 in the regular season and a conference championship.”

The readers of MLive and the Muskegon Chronicle have taken notice of the unprecedented success the Eagles are having on the pitch this fall and flooded our Athlete of the Week poll this past week in support of Sutton and his playmaking abilities.

Sutton received more than 40 percent of the total votes cast in this week’s fan vote, as he doubled up the next closest candidate in total votes to win the MLive Muskegon Athlete of the Week award for Sept. 21-28.

Ludington golf standout Emma McKinley finished runner-up, followed by last week’s Athlete of the Week award winner Paige Anderson of Reeths-Puffer, while Addi Hovey and Clayton Ackerly of Hart rounded out the Top 5 vote-getters.
