In a back-and-forth battle, Virginia Tech trails West Virginia 13-7 heading into the half.

The game would be a higher-scoring affair, but both defenses have clutched up when needed, holding the offensive units to a combined 4-for-12 on third-down conversions.

On their second drive of the game, West Virginia found itself in the red zone, but the Lunch Pail defense hunkered down to hold the Mountaineers to only a field goal.

The Hokies came right back, marching down the field and finished the 92-yard drive with a 28-yard touchdown reception by receiver Caleb Smith to make it 7-3. That was Smith’s second touchdown on the season and his sixth of his career.

The following drive, West Virginia was making its way into Tech’s territory, but a forced fumble by defensive back Jalen Stroman that was recovered by a fellow defensive back Dorian Strong gave the ball back to the Hokies.

With just under two minutes left in the half, Tech was able to stop West Virginia in the red zone yet again and held them to only a field goal to make it 7-6.

The Mountaineers closed out the half with a touchdown with only 11 seconds left, to make the score 13-7 heading into the break.
