Coronado’s Preston Defriend in second; Levelland’s Max Vergara in the lead

Coronado senior Preston Defriend sits in second place after a four-under 68 in the first round of the Class 5A boys golf state tournament Monday at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.

Defriend is two strokes behind Texarkana Texas High’s Thomas Curry. Frisco Wakeland’s Luke Colton, the only other player to shoot under par, is on Defriend’s heels after a first-round 69.

Lubbock-Cooper is tied with Lake Belton for ninth in the team standings after a 315. Kyler Ezell and Garrett Kitten each turned in a five-over 77 to lead the Pirates.

Argyle holds the lead at 297, with Comal Smithson Valley and Texas High following in a second-place tie at 302.

In the 4A tournament at Legends Golf Course in Kingsland, Levelland’s Max Vergara holds a one-stroke lead after shooting a 69. Irving Uplift North Hills’ Maddox Burton, Wimberley’s Jaxon Donaldson and Boerne’s Price Hill each holed 70 to sit in a second-place tie.

Canyon Randall holds the team lead at 300, followed by Sulfur Springs (303) and Andrews (308).

The New Home boys are in third after a 308 total in the 2A tournament at Lions Municipal in Austin. Lindsay (303) is in front, followed by Albany (306).

Zack Armes, who is in fourth place, led the Leopards with a 71. He’s two strokes back of the lead, which is shared by three players.

Woden’s Jayce Driver, Sonora’s Dylan Ford and Lindsay’s Landry Rogers each turned in a 69.

New Home players included Graham Keys (76), Owen Morris (76), Reagan Fiedler (85) and Kaden Gray (85).

Borden County is in line for the 1A team state championship after a 341 on the first day at Kyle’s Plum Creek. D’Hanis and Wildorado are closest at 346, with Springlake-Earth sitting fourth at 351.

Koda Bigham is tied for sixth individually after leading the Coyotes with a 79. Spur’s Preston Pafford also holed 79. Meadow’s Taylor Caswell is a stroke behind, tied for eighth.

Garrison Proctor (84), Holt Freeman (87) and Kasen Oaks (91) made up Borden County’s total, and Clay Wilson turned in a 114.
