Caps sign Dylan Strome to five-year, $25 million extension originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The Capitals have added another player to their core of the future, signing center Dylan Strome to a five-year, $25 million extension that keeps him in DC through the 2027-28 season. The team announced the deal Friday morning.
“Dylan is an intelligent and skilled center and has been a great addition to our organization,” GM Brian MacLellan said in a statement. “We are pleased to sign him to a long-term contract. We feel his skill set is a great fit for our team as he enters the prime years of his career at an important position.”
Strome signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Capitals last offseason after the Chicago Blackhawks declined to make him a qualifying offer. Playing primarily on their top line alongside Alex Ovechkin, the 25-year-old racked up 11 goals and 25 assists in 52 games prior to the NHL All-Star Break.
In seven NHL seasons, Strome has tallied 60 goals and 94 assists across 225 games. He’s on pace to flirt with his career high of 57 points, set back in 2018-19 when the Arizona Coyotes traded him to Chicago midseason.
By avoiding restricted free agency this summer, Strome is now the Capitals’ only player under contract through 2028. He joins eight other players signed through at least the next three seasons: Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, TJ Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nic Dowd, John Carlson, Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren.
Strome represents the youngest player in that group by four years, giving the veteran-laden Capitals a potential building block who still has his prime seasons in front of him. Center is a deep position for Washington, both on its NHL roster and among its prospect talent, but his ability to play wing as well gives the team lots of flexibility moving forward.
