Albany three shots off lead at state boys tournament

AUSTIN – Albany is three shots off the lead after Day 1 of the Class 2A boys state golf tournament Monday at Lions Golf Course.

Lindsay shot 303 to lead the tournament, followed by Albany (306) and New Home (308).

Sonora’s Dylan Ford, Lindsay’s Landry Rogers and Woden’s Jayce Drive each shot 2-under-par 71 to lead the individual competition. Albany’s Lute Wheeler is tied with Cooper’s Canon Ingram for ninth (75).

Huffman Heatly (76), Luke Marshall (76), Ayden Balliew (79) and Houston Heatly (89) round out the Albany Lions’ scores. Albany is the only Big Country school at the 2A tournament.

The final round is Tuesday at Lions Golf Course.

Comanche’s Jones in title hunt

At Austin, Comanche’s Ace Jones shot a 4-over-par 76 to sit in 10th placeth place at the Class 3A boys state golf tournament at Jimmy Clay Golf Course.

Callisburg’s Boo Moerschell leads the tournament with a 69, followed by Orangefield’s Xander Parks (70), while Callisburg’s JJ Walsh is tied with Orangefield’s Lincoln Parks for third (73).

Callisburg leads the team competition (298), while Brock’s Gold team is second at 311, and Orangefield is third (316).

Jones is the only Big Country athlete in the tournament.

Brownwood tied for fifth

At Kingsland, Brownwood is tied with Bullard for fifth with a 311 going into the final round of the Class 4A boys state golf tournament at Legends Golf Course.

Canyon Randall leads the tournament with a 300, followed by Sulfur Springs (303) and Andrews (308).

Levelland’s Max Vergara leads the individual competition with a 3-under-par 69. Three others – Boerne’s Price Hill, Wimberley’s Jaxon Donald and Uplift North Hills Prep’s Maddox Burton – are tied for second at 70.

Brownwood’s Caleb Modawell and Hudson Reagan are tied for 13thth with Randall’s Jack Lankford at 75. Sir Jones (79), Slayde Espinoza (82) and Cobe Walker (82) round out the Brownwood Lions’ scores.

Westbrook in the top 10

At Kyle, Westbrook shot 374 to finish seventh after the first day of the Class 1A boys state golf tournament at Plum Creek Golf Club.

Borden County leads the team competition with a 341 – five shots better than D’Hanis and Wildorado, who are tied at 346.

Sidney’s Grant Drummond shot 6-over-par 77 to go into the final round in third. D’Hanis’ Kenny Arnett is the leader (75), while Wildorado’s Hunter Corman is second (76).

Eula’s Robert Sandford (83) is eight shots off the lead.

Brannon Larson (89), Parker Matlock (91), Greyson Jeffrey (94), Bo Payne (100) and Chance Morris (111) round out Westbrook’s scores.
