Women’s Soccer Player of the Week: Andrea Fernandez, Flagler

The reigning PBC Player and Freshman of the Year got her sophomore campaign off to a solid start as she scored both goals in Flagler’s 2-1 road win in a driving rainstorm at Mount Olive on Thursday. The forward from Pozoblanco, Spain, tied the game in the 17th minute as goalkeeper Madison North cleared the ball over everyone to find a streaking Fernandez down the middle. She split two defenders and pounded the goal home for her first of the season. She then won the game just after halftime on a free kick from just outside the 18 that she lofted over the defensive wall and curled down just under the crossbar. Fernandez was one of three PBC players with a multi-goal game during the opening weekend.

Women’s Soccer Defender of the Week: Brooke Ouimette, Columbus State

Ouimette supported the 15th-ranked Cougar backline to two shutouts to start the season in the CSU Collegiate Invitational. The senior from Sugar Hill, Ga., was a key part of the CSU defense that held West Alabama to one shot in a 3-0 season-opening win on Friday. Columbus State followed with a dominant 6-0 win over Mississippi College on Sunday, allowing just six shots on goal in the clean sheet. Columbus State is the only PBC team to record two shutouts in the first two games on the opening weekend.

Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week: Emily Worrell, USC Beaufort

Worrell made three saves as USCB began their transition to NCAA Division II with a 3-0 shutout of Francis Marion in the season opener on Sunday. The sophomore from Keedysville, Md., was the backbone of the Sand Sharks defense as FMU took 10 total shots in the game, three of those on goal in a back-and-forth affair. The shutout was the third of her career.
