The Yankees offense mustered just two hits as they fell to the Angels, 5-1, on Tuesday night.
Takeaways
-A day after manager Aaron Boone was questioned constantly about pitching to Shohei Ohtani on Tuesday instead of intentionally walking him to get to Mickey Moniak, the latter would get the Angels on the board early with a two-run shot in the first inning. Moniak’s homer came after Ohtani struck out on three pitches — all swinging — and it was just the beginning.
Moniak would finish the game 3-for-4 with three RBI. He singled home Ohtani — who hit an RBI triple in the previous at-bat — to put the Angels up 5-1. Ohtani finished 1-for-3 with a walk.
-It was more than enough for Angels starter Patrick Sandoval who held the Yankees to one run and two hits over 7.1 innings pitched. Sandoval’s start was a continued trend for the Yankees as the lefty came into Tuesday’s game with a 4.41 ERA and has now lowered it to 4.16.
-Domingo German was up and down in this one. After giving up the two-run homer to Moniak, he walked the bases loaded with zero outs in the third inning. After a strikeout, German threw a wild pitch to push a run across for the Angels. German would get Mike Moustakas to ground out to limit the damage.
German would have 1-2-3 innings but also gave up a pair of runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. German went six innings (106 pitches), giving up five runs on four hits, three walks and struck out nine batters.
-The lone Yankee hits came from a Gleyber Torres solo shot to left field in the third inning to cut the Angels’ lead to 2-1 and an Anthony Volpe single in the eighth inning. The only other base runners came from Torres, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Harrison Bader walks as well as Giancarlo Stanton reaching on an error.
– Oswald Peraza, who reached base five times starting Monday’s game in the leadoff spot, had less success on Tuesday. He wound up going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the leadoff spot.
